SkinPen Microneedling: Pre and Post Treatment Instructions

At Seaport Medspa, we use the SkinPen® by Crown Aesthetics - the first FDA-cleared microneedling device to help improve your skin’s tone, texture, and overall health. This powerful treatment stimulates your body’s natural healing process to boost collagen and elastin, creating smoother, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin. Clinical studies show results can last up to six months.

To get the best possible results—and ensure your skin heals safely—it’s important to follow these pre- and post-care guidelines.

Before Your SkinPen Microneedling Treatment

Preparing your skin properly helps minimize irritation and supports a smooth recovery. Please review the following instructions carefully:

Pregnant or Breastfeeding

Microneedling is not recommended during pregnancy or while nursing. We’ll be happy to help you explore other treatment options that are safe during this time.

History of Cold Sores

If you've ever had cold sores (oral herpes), please let our team know in advance. We may prescribe an antiviral medication to help prevent an outbreak.

Avoid Sunburn Before Treatment

You cannot be treated if you arrive with a sunburn. Avoid direct sun exposure in the days leading up to your appointment.

No Spray Tans or Self-Tanner

Avoid using spray tans or self-tanning products for at least 10 days before your appointment. These products can irritate the skin and interfere with your results.

Pause Certain Skincare Products

Please stop using any of the following products 3 days before your treatment:

  • Retinol or tretinoin (Retin-A)

  • Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)

  • Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as salicylic acid

  • Hydroquinone

These ingredients can increase skin sensitivity and may lead to irritation.

Arrive With Clean, Product-Free Skin

Please come to your appointment with a freshly cleansed face—no makeup, moisturizer, sunscreen, or perfume on the skin.

Eat and Hydrate Before Your Visit

Make sure you’ve eaten a light meal and are well-hydrated before your appointment.

After Your SkinPen Microneedling Treatment

Your skin will go through a natural healing process following microneedling. Here’s how to care for it during the recovery period:

Cleanse Gently With Just Water for 24 Hours

For the first 24 hours, rinse your skin with cool water only—no cleansers or products. Gently pat your skin dry.

Skip SPF and Skincare Products for 24 Hours

Avoid using sunscreen, serums, or other skincare products during this initial healing window. Your skin needs time to breathe and begin recovery.

After 24 Hours: Use Gentle Products Only

From day two through day four, use a mild cleanser and lightweight moisturizer. Avoid any active ingredients or exfoliants.

No Picking or Scratching

You may experience light flaking or peeling—that’s completely normal. Let your skin shed naturally and avoid picking to prevent scarring or infection.

Avoid Heavy Workouts for 48 Hours

Sweating can irritate freshly treated skin and increase the risk of bacteria. Light walking is fine, but skip the gym for at least 48 hours.

No Makeup for 48 Hours

Hold off on wearing makeup for two days to minimize the chance of irritation or infection.

Avoid Heat for 72 Hours

Stay out of hot tubs, saunas, and swimming pools for at least 72 hours to prevent inflammation and reduce the risk of bacteria exposure.

Return to Your Skincare Routine After 72 Hours

After day three (or when your skin feels fully healed), you can safely return to your normal skincare routine. Start reintroducing active ingredients slowly.

Protect Your Skin From the Sun

Your skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure after microneedling. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily and avoid direct sun exposure for 10 days following treatment.
